Under the patronage of Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Innovators Support Fund launched the Innovation Catalyst 2024 competition in November 2023. The competition targets innovative students at Egyptian universities in various scientific disciplines who have creative ideas that offer solutions to Egypt’s development challenges. The Luminous Eye smart lighting system project won financial support worth EGP 34,000 for its implementation.

The project team students are: Reham Mahmoud Rushdi Abdella, Osama Ahmed Mahmoud Ahmed, Kerollos Ashraf Wadea Gerges, Mazen Ahmed Fadl Allah Sharawy, and the Project supervisor is Dr. Maysa Khalil Noby

The smart lighting system project is an innovative effort to address road safety and energy efficiency in modern infrastructure. Its main goal is to create a smart lighting system that improves visibility on roads, reduces accidents, and saves energy. This project supports sustainable development by using resources wisely, lowering environmental impact, and helping maintain roads proactively.

The smart lighting system was designed by combining advanced technologies, including motion sensors (PIR and ultrasonic), Raspberry Pi cameras for monitoring, humidity sensors to detect fog, laser and infrared sensors to identify road cracks, and energy-efficient LED lights. The system uses Arduino and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers for control, GSM modules for real-time alerts, and components like breadboards, jumper wires, and power supplies (12V/20A and CR2032 batteries).
